Producing Cosmetic Lotions

Lotions are among the most widely used cosmetic products. They are more fluid than creams and contain more water. Because they contain water, fats and oils, production creates finely distributed emulsions. We plan and supply homogenising mixers that let you make stable products in short process times.

Narrow droplet distributionSmall particles, evenly distributed.
Pressure and vacuum-proofStable emulsions with short process times.
Adjustable shearIntensive homogenising as required.

Hydrophobic and hydrophilic lotions

A lotion is a multi-phase preparation. Depending on the formula, it has different properties:

Hydrophobic

These products repel water, are very greasy and cannot be washed off. Water, oil and wax have different viscosities.

Hydrophilic

They are less greasy, spread easily and wash off well. However, they need very fine emulsions so that the active ingredients work well.

Requirements for the homogenising mixer

Besides a small particle size, the particle distribution matters most. Only then can all ingredients develop their full effect. Therefore, the plant should offer the following:

  • A pressure and vacuum-proof vessel design
  • Stable, narrowly distributed emulsions with short process times
  • A scraper system that works in both directions for radial and vertical mixing
  • Intensive homogenisation with adjustable shear speed
  • GMP-compliant design with CIP cleaning

This is how permanently stable emulsions are created. Are you planning a new plant? We are happy to advise you, including on used homogenising mixers.

FAQ: Producing lotions

What is the difference between a lotion and a cream?

Lotions have a higher water content and are more fluid. Most are O/W emulsions that spread easily and absorb quickly.

How is a lotion produced industrially?

Water and oil phases are heated separately, emulsified and homogenised in a vacuum homogenising mixer, cooled while stirring and completed with heat-sensitive additives.

How do lotions stay stable despite low viscosity?

Through very fine, narrow droplet distribution, suitable emulsifiers and stabilisers and reproducible homogenisation.

Which machine is suitable?

Pressure and vacuum rated homogenising mixers with adjustable shear, a scraper system independent of rotation direction and a rotating CIP system.

Does SEEFRIED supply plants for lotions?

Yes, SEEFRIED Verfahrenstechnik plans emulsion plants and supplies inspected used homogenising mixers.
