A good shower gel brings together raw materials with very different properties. The result should be a stable, pleasantly thick product that cleans well. We plan and supply homogenising mixers that make this process safe and efficient. You can find more solutions in our cosmetics section.
What is in a shower gel?
Most shower gels are based on an aqueous surfactant solution. Other ingredients each have a clear task:
Surfactants
They provide the cleaning effect. The pH value should be around 5.5.
Re-fatting oils
Emulsifiers such as lecithin, fatty alcohols or glyceryl laurates distribute the oils evenly. This requires reliable emulsification.
Thickeners and gelling agents
Xanthan, cellulose, alginate or polyglycerol esters give the product its pleasant texture.
Requirements for the mixing plant
Production is a multi-stage process. Homogenising mixers should therefore be well equipped:
- Induction of water and powder below the liquid level, right at the dispersing tool
- A vacuum-proof design that keeps air out
- A scraper system that works in both directions, combined with vertical and horizontal agitators for high-viscosity products
- Optional pH monitoring in the homogeniser chamber
- Aseptic GMP design with an integrated CIP system under the lid
Such a mixer is often also suitable for shampoo or bubble baths. We are happy to advise whether a new or a used plant is the better fit.
FAQ: Producing shower gel
What is shower gel made of?
Mainly water and cleansing surfactants, plus thickeners (e.g. salt, xanthan, cellulose derivatives), re-fatting oils with emulsifiers, fragrances, care ingredients and preservatives. The pH is usually around 5.5.
How is shower gel produced industrially?
Surfactants are dissolved in water, powders and thickeners are drawn in under vacuum, additives are mixed in, and pH and viscosity are adjusted. Large volumes are also produced continuously.
How are foam and air inclusions avoided?
By working under vacuum, adding powders and liquids below the liquid level and using adapted speeds.
Which machine is suitable for shower gel?
Vacuum homogenising mixers with scraper agitator, powder and liquid induction, optional pH measurement in the homogeniser chamber and CIP cleaning.
Does SEEFRIED supply plants for shower gel and shampoo?
Yes, we plan batch and continuous plants and offer inspected used homogenising mixers.
