Agitation in Process Engineering

Agitation is a mixing process in liquids using differently shaped agitator tools. The goal is an even distribution of all additives and their physical states, such as temperature, viscosity and density. As a sub-area of mixing, agitation is one of the basic mechanical processes.

Even distributionThe same structure throughout the vessel.
Fast heating and coolingGood horizontal and vertical product movement.
Low energyThe required homogeneity in a short time.

What happens during agitation

  • Solid particles are stirred up in the liquid
  • Miscible liquids are homogenised
  • Differences in temperature and concentration even out
  • Solids dissolve faster and chemical reactions speed up
  • At the same time, the product can be aerated or deaerated under vacuum

Applications

Agitation is used in many industries: in pharmacy and cosmetics, in food and biotechnology, and in the chemical industry. Especially in cosmetics, its versatility makes it a basic process. Agitation is enough whenever liquids only need to be moved or low shear is sufficient. This is the case, for example, with:

Agitator types and design

In agitation, the key is to reach the required homogeneity quickly and with little energy. In addition, heat transfer during heating and cooling should be as good as possible. Depending on the task, different agitators can be used:

  • Comb paddle agitator
  • Anchor agitator with baffles
  • Easy Visco agitator
  • Dissolver agitator
  • Propeller agitator
  • Circulation agitator
  • Magnetic agitator

When choosing, the agitator geometry and drive must be matched exactly to the process. Thanks to many years of experience, we design agitators that work optimally in your process.

Frequently Asked Questions about agitation

What is agitation?

Agitation is a mixing process in liquids using variously shaped agitator tools. The aim is a homogeneous distribution of all additives and uniform temperature, viscosity and density. Agitation is a sub-area of mixing.

Which types of agitators are there?

For example comb paddle agitators, anchor agitators with baffles, Easy Visco, dissolver, propeller, rotary and magnetic agitators. The right one depends on product and process.

When is agitation sufficient?

Whenever moving the liquid or low shear stress is sufficient – for example in the production of gels, suppositories or eye ointments.

What matters when designing an agitator?

The required homogeneity should be achieved quickly with low energy input and optimal heat transfer during heating and cooling. Agitator geometry and drive must match the process.
