Pharmaceutical Suspensions

In the production of suspensions, components with different viscosities are combined. Because solids and liquids have very different properties, the requirements for the mixing process also vary greatly.

Efficient incorporation of solids

Homogenising mixers offer solutions for most applications. Thanks to special processes for dispersing powdered raw materials, solids can be handled easily and with as little dust as possible.

Powerful process plants also enable the targeted addition of raw materials. This speeds up the process, shortens production and cleaning times and increases production capacity.

Requirements for the plant

For the production of suspensions, the plant should offer flexible and highly efficient agitation and homogenising properties. The following features are particularly important:

  • introducing powders below the liquid level
  • optimal powder wetting
  • breaking up agglomerates and individual particles
  • optional particle size measurement to monitor and assure product quality
  • CIP cleaning installed stationary in the lid, optional spray heads on the agitator and sterilisation (SIP)

Particle size measurement helps keep the number of airborne particles as low as possible. This freedom from suspended particles is the prerequisite for filtering particles up to a certain size out of the suspension.

FAQ: Producing suspensions

What is a pharmaceutical suspension?

A suspension is a dispersion of solid, insoluble active particles in a liquid, e.g. antibiotic syrups or antacids. Fine particle size, redispersibility and dosing accuracy are key.

How are powders incorporated without lumps?

By dust-free vacuum powder induction directly below the liquid level into the rotor-stator homogeniser, so every particle is wetted and agglomerates are broken up.

How does a suspension stay stable?

Through small, uniform particles, suitable thickeners and wetting agents and homogeneous distribution. In-process particle size measurement assures quality.

Which machine is suitable for suspensions?

Homogenising mixers with scraper agitator, homogeniser in the vessel or recirculation loop, vacuum operation and CIP/SIP.

Does SEEFRIED offer plants for suspensions?

Yes, SEEFRIED Verfahrenstechnik plans plants for pharmaceutical suspensions and supplies inspected used homogenising mixers.
