Requirement Specifications for Process Plants

The requirement specification describes all of the client’s requirements for the deliveries and services of a contractor. A clear definition of the project to be procured is the prerequisite for this document and the tender.

Clear requirementsAll requirements for delivery and service in one place.
GMP & GAMPStandards and ambient conditions defined from the outset.
Including interfacesOptionally including the associated interface descriptions.

First, it must be clarified which standards and ambient conditions apply to the tender – for example GAMP or GMP. To define the process engineering project clearly, we then divide it into individual phases.

Phases and contents of a requirement specification

The key contents of a tender include:

  1. 1Basic parametersDefinition of the basic parameters in the preliminary project (planning phase 1).
  2. 2Draft designBasic engineering with process design (planning phase 2).
  3. 3FEED & tenderTender documents, interface definitions and the specification for approval (phase 3).
  4. 4Detail engineeringEnquiry and procurement.
  5. 5Functional specificationThe contractor prepares it based on the approved tender documents.
  6. 6Construction supervisionSupervision of the construction phase at the supplier; the client approves the quality documents.
  7. 7FATFactory Acceptance Test – acceptance at the supplier’s works.
  8. 8Installation & commissioningInstallation and commissioning of the plant on site.
  9. 9IQInstallation qualification: verification against the order documents.
  10. 10OQOperational qualification: verification of the intended functionality.
  11. 11PQPerformance qualification: proof of the required performance.
  12. 12SATSite Acceptance Test – acceptance at the customer’s site.

SEEFRIED Verfahrenstechnik GmbH prepares this specification for your process requirements – optionally including the associated interface descriptions.

Frequently Asked Questions about requirement specifications for process plants

What is a requirement specification?

The requirement specification (user requirement specification) describes all of the customer’s requirements for the contractor’s deliveries and services. It is the basis for tendering, offer comparison and the supplier’s functional specification.

What is the difference between a requirement specification and a functional specification?

The requirement specification defines what the customer requires. The functional specification is prepared by the contractor based on the approved tender documents and describes how the requirements will be met.

Which phases should a requirement specification cover?

From defining the basic parameters through basic engineering, FEED, detail engineering and procurement to construction supervision, FAT, installation, qualification (IQ, OQ, PQ) and SAT at the customer’s site.

Which standards are relevant?

Depending on the project, for example GMP and GAMP as well as the respective environmental conditions. They must be clarified before tendering.
