The production of active substances involves processes that must be carried out precisely, quickly, efficiently and gently. A conventional agitator alone cannot handle this task.
High-performance agitation and homogenising systems
Process plants with integrated, powerful agitation and homogenising systems are therefore used. Their rotor/stator system ensures optimal size reduction of the solids and at the same time increases the surface area of the powder in the liquid. This produces agglomerate-free solutions within a few minutes.
Breaking up the agglomerates makes the entire particle surface accessible to the liquid. As a result, active substances dissolve faster and more evenly, suspensions become more homogeneous and dosing accuracy increases.
For poorly soluble active substances, a finer particle size can improve the dissolution rate and thus bioavailability. True micronisation down to a few micrometres, however, usually requires jet mills, bead mills or high-pressure homogenisers. The rotor/stator homogeniser mainly handles deagglomeration, wetting and dispersion.
Requirements for the plant
- variable adjustment of the process parameters
- variable speed for agitator and homogeniser for efficient agitation and homogenisation in all speed ranges
- easy expansion in line with new developments and requirements
FAQ: Processing active substances
What does active substance processing require from a plant?
Precise, fast, efficient yet gentle processes: high shear for dispersing, variable speeds, exact temperature control, GMP design and CIP/SIP.
Why use homogenising mixers instead of simple agitators?
Only the rotor-stator system generates the shear forces needed to comminute solids, break up agglomerates and distribute actives evenly.
How does particle size influence efficacy?
Smaller particles have a larger surface and dissolve faster, which can improve bioavailability and reduce the required amount of active.
How are sensitive actives protected?
With infinitely variable speeds, controlled energy input, temperature control and processing under vacuum or inert gas.
How does SEEFRIED support API manufacturers?
With process consulting, plant design, qualification and inspected used homogenising mixers.
