Producing Cosmetic Gels

Cosmetic gels consist of gelled liquids made with suitable swelling agents. For the ingredients to work well in the finished product, the mixing process has to be exactly right. We plan and supply homogenising mixers for gels in the cosmetics industry.

Variable speedAgitator and homogeniser can be finely adjusted.
Vacuum inductionCarbopol goes straight into the circulation flow.
Bubble-freeLittle air in the product thanks to vacuum or overpressure.

Hydrogels and oleogels

Gels are single-phase systems. Depending on the base liquid, there are two groups:

Hydrogels

They are based on water. Typical examples are hair gels or cooling care gels.

Oleogels

They are based on oil. Therefore, they suit re-fatting care products well.

Incorporating Carbopol safely

The polyacrylic acid Carbopol is often used as a thickener. It thickens many solvents and even non-polar systems. However, incorporating the powder needs a multi-stage mixing process:

  • Powders are easily drawn in and dispersed directly
  • A low speed during powder addition prevents air from entering
  • Agitator and homogeniser have variable speed control
  • The plant also works efficiently in the low speed range
  • Vacuum-controlled induction feeds into the circulation flow of the vessel
  • Pressure and vacuum-proof design, as well as GMP-compliant construction

FAQ: Producing cosmetic gels

What is the difference between a hydrogel and an oleogel?

Hydrogels are water-based and thickened e.g. with carbomer, xanthan or cellulose derivatives. Oleogels are oil-based and gelled with waxes, silica or polymers.

How is Carbopol incorporated without lumps?

The powder is drawn in slowly at low speed, ideally by vacuum below the liquid level into the homogeniser, fully dispersed and only then neutralised.

How are air bubbles in the gel avoided?

By working under vacuum, using low speeds during powder addition and deaerating before filling.

Which machine is suitable for cosmetic gels?

Pressure and vacuum rated homogenising mixers with variable speed, powder induction into the recirculation flow and a scraper agitator.

Does SEEFRIED supply plants for gels?

Yes, SEEFRIED Verfahrenstechnik plans gel production plants and offers inspected used vacuum homogenising mixers.
