Cosmetic creams are among the most widely used cosmetic products. They can be end products or base materials for further processing. As multi-phase preparations, they contain both aqueous and lipophilic phases. We plan and supply homogenising mixers that turn these phases into stable, fine emulsions.
Hydrophobic and hydrophilic creams
During production, all ingredients are processed into emulsions. Depending on the formula, the cream becomes hydrophobic or hydrophilic.
Hydrophobic creams
They are greasy and water-repellent and cannot be washed off. They consist of water, oil and wax with differing viscosities.
Hydrophilic creams
They wash off easily, spread well and absorb quickly. They need very fine emulsions so that the active ingredients can work at their best.
Requirements for homogenising mixers
Process plants for cosmetic creams should offer a few special features:
- A pressure and vacuum-proof machine design
- A scraper system that works in both directions of rotation
- Homogenisation with adjustable shear energy
- Aseptic GMP design with CIP and SIP cleaning
- Design to current standards and guidelines
We help you choose the right mixer for your cream, from the first trial to the finished plant. New and used machines are both possible.
FAQ: Producing cosmetic creams
How are creams produced industrially?
Water and oil phases are heated separately, combined and emulsified in a vacuum homogenising mixer, then cooled while stirring. Heat-sensitive actives and fragrances are added during cooling.
What is the difference between W/O and O/W creams?
In O/W creams oil droplets are dispersed in water: they absorb quickly and wash off easily. W/O creams contain water droplets in an oil phase and are richer and more protective.
Why is droplet size so important?
Fine, narrow droplet distributions make creams stable, improve skin feel and appearance and prevent creaming or breaking of the emulsion.
Which machine is suitable for creams?
Vacuum homogenising mixers with a scraper agitator independent of rotation direction, controllable homogeniser, heating/cooling jacket and CIP.
Does SEEFRIED offer plants for creams?
Yes, SEEFRIED Verfahrenstechnik plans cream production plants and supplies inspected used homogenising mixers, e.g. from Becomix.
