Process Technology for Cosmetics

Cosmetics production requires many mixing and dosing tasks to work together smoothly. Products are often highly viscous or abrasive, contain a lot of solids or are hard to clean. We plan and supply process plants that let you produce high-quality cosmetics reliably and economically.

Challenges in cosmetics production

Today, cosmetics must be of high quality and meet the highest standards. The same applies to process technology. The following points are especially important:

  • Reliable processing of highly viscous, abrasive or solids-rich products
  • Stable, effective emulsions, even in large volumes
  • Short batch times and easy cleaning
  • Compliance with current GMP standards, for example ISO 22716

Typical applications in cosmetics

We plan and supply process plants for these products. Each page describes the specific requirements for processes and mixers.

From the lab to production

From natural and decorative cosmetics to discount products, cosmetics are made on process plants. Scale-up is a key requirement for this. Small lab batches must transfer 100 % to production machines. Therefore, lab machines and plants for several tonnes should deliver the same product quality.

Batch processes

Many cosmetic products are made in batches. Large mixers with suitable batch vessels are ideal for this, for example homogenising mixers.

Continuous processes

For shampoo, shower gel, hair conditioner, hair dyes, toothpaste or soaps, continuous processes with inline homogenisers are also an option, see homogenisation.

Frequently asked questions: process technology for cosmetics

What does cosmetics production require from process plants?

High-viscosity, abrasive or solids-rich products, stable emulsions in large batches with short batch times, easy cleaning and compliance with GMP according to ISO 22716.

Which machines are used for creams, lotions and gels?

Mainly vacuum homogenising mixers with scraper agitator, rotor-stator homogeniser, powder induction and heating/cooling jacket, complemented by phase and premix vessels.

How is scale-up from lab to production achieved?

With laboratory, pilot and production machines of the same design, so recipes can be transferred to batches of several tonnes without loss of quality.

Batch or continuous?

Creams and emulsions are usually made in batches. For large volumes of shampoo, shower gel, conditioner or toothpaste, continuous processes with inline homogenisers are often more economical.

What services does SEEFRIED offer cosmetics manufacturers?

Process engineering consulting, planning and user requirement specifications, construction supervision, qualification, process optimisation and inspected used homogenising mixers.
