Most process plants need steam for thermal processes or to supply their temperature control systems. Steam plants are therefore almost always part of building process plants or a new factory.
How process steam is generated
In the steam generator, the hot flue gases heat the water to boiling temperature until it evaporates. This produces saturated steam, which collects in the steam space above the boiling water. For the steam generator to operate safely and without damage, feed water and boiler water must meet certain requirements.
Requirements for feed and boiler water
The requirements usually depend on three factors:
- design of the steam generator
- operating overpressure
- operating conditions
On this basis, the requirements for feed and boiler water are defined. It also matters whether salt-free, low-salt or saline feed water is used. Salt-free water can be supplied by a DI water plant, for example.
In all cases, feed and boiler water should be clear, colourless and free of suspended matter. In addition, conditioning the water prevents corrosion.

Frequently Asked Questions about steam plants
Why do process plants need steam plants?
Most process engineering plants require steam for thermal processes or to supply their temperature control systems. Steam supply is therefore almost always an issue when building process plants and factories.
What requirements apply to feed and boiler water?
They depend on the design, operating pressure and operating conditions of the steam generator. In principle, the water should be clear, colourless and free of suspended substances; conditioning is required to prevent corrosion.
What components does a steam generating plant consist of?
Among others: steam generator, feed water treatment, blowdown, mixing cooler, conductivity and pH measurement, exhaust gas heat exchanger, condensate return and steam pressure reducers.
