Mascara Production

Mascara makes the eyelashes look longer. Modern products also add volume. At the end of production, the compound is extremely viscous and in some cases barely flows. We plan and supply homogenising mixers that handle these conditions reliably. Find out more in our cosmetics section.

Powerful scrapersRadial and vertical mixing at high viscosity.
High shearPigments do not need pre-grinding.
Low-dust inductionVolatile powders are incorporated cleanly.

What is mascara made of?

Eyelash colour contains natural and inorganic pigments. Black and brown are the most common, while iron oxide creates the brown shades.

Pigments

Natural and inorganic colour pigments provide the colour.

Oils

Mineral oils, lanolin, linseed and castor oil care for the lashes.

Waxes and shine

Waxes act as binders. Guanine provides the shine.

Requirements for the homogenising mixer

Besides hygiene, handling very different viscosities is key. Many fittings for the homogeniser chamber, circulation line and lid help to secure product quality.

  • Melting fats and homogenising with heat in one step
  • Efficient circulation for ingredients with different viscosities
  • Very good radial and vertical mixing of the high-viscosity compound
  • Easy induction and dispersion of powders and pigments
  • High shear speed, so pre-grinding of pigments is no longer needed
  • Low-dust processing of volatile powders

FAQ: Producing mascara

What is mascara made of?

Pigments (mostly iron oxides, carbon black), waxes as binders, oils, emulsifiers, film-forming polymers and preservatives. Many mascaras are wax-in-water emulsions.

What makes mascara production difficult?

Towards the end of the process the mass becomes extremely viscous and hardly flowable. The plant must reliably stir, homogenise and discharge this viscosity.

How are pigments incorporated into mascara?

Drawn in with low dust under vacuum and dispersed with high shear in the rotor-stator homogeniser, which often makes pre-grinding unnecessary.

Which machine is suitable?

Robust vacuum homogenising mixers with a powerful scraper agitator, heatable vessel and strong drive for high-viscosity products.

Does SEEFRIED supply plants for mascara?

Yes, we plan plants for decorative cosmetics and supply inspected used homogenising mixers.
