Hair conditioners are used after washing the hair. They differ from shampoos in having a low, i.e. acidic, pH value. This closes the cuticle of the hair, smooths the surface and improves combability. We design and supply homogenising mixers for these products from the field of cosmetics.
How a hair conditioner is made
Recipes vary greatly. However, hair rinses usually contain proteins, acidity regulators, humectants and preservatives, oils, surfactants, perfume, antistatic agents and lubricants. A powerful plant processes them seamlessly:
- 1Preparing raw materialsFirst, the plant dissolves, melts or mixes the raw materials directly before addition.
- 2Drawing in phasesIt then draws in the water and fat phases, hot or at room temperature.
- 3EmulsifyingNext, a fine O/W emulsion is formed, see Emulsifying.
- 4Checking pH and cleaningFinally come the pH check and CIP cleaning.
Requirements for the homogenising mixer
- Drawing in and mixing of water and fat phases in the hot and cold process
- Dissolving, melting and homogenising all raw materials in one plant
- Safe processing of highly viscous components
- Optional in-process pH control
- CIP system under the lid for strict hygiene regulations

FAQ: Manufacturing hair conditioner
How does a hair conditioner work?
Cationic conditioning agents and the acidic pH value close the cuticle opened by washing, smooth the hair surface, reduce static charge and improve combability.
How is conditioner manufactured industrially?
Usually as an O/W emulsion: fatty alcohols and cationic surfactants are melted, emulsified into the water phase, homogenised and cooled while stirring. The pH value and viscosity are then adjusted.
Why is in-process pH control useful?
In-process measurement allows correction during manufacturing, avoids rework and shortens the batch time.
Which machine is suitable?
Vacuum homogenising mixers with heating/cooling jacket, scraper agitator, phase induction and a CIP system in the lid.
Does SEEFRIED supply plants for conditioner?
Yes, we design plants for hair conditioners and rinses – batch or continuous – and offer inspected used homogenising mixers.
