Lotions are among the most frequently used cosmetic products. They are more fluid than creams and contain more water. Since they contain water, fats and oils, finely distributed emulsions are formed during manufacture. We design and supply homogenising mixers that enable you to produce stable products in a short process time.
Hydrophobic and hydrophilic lotions
A lotion is a multi-phase preparation. Depending on the recipe, it has different properties:
Hydrophobic
These products repel water, are very greasy and cannot be washed off. Water, oil and wax have different viscosities.
Hydrophilic
They are less greasy, spread easily and can be washed off. This requires very fine emulsions, so that the active ingredients work well.
Requirements for the homogenising mixer
In addition to a small particle size, the particle distribution is what counts above all. This is the only way for all ingredients to develop their full effect. The plant should therefore offer the following:
- Pressure- and vacuum-resistant vessel design
- Stable, narrowly distributed emulsions with short process times
- Scraper system independent of the direction of rotation for radial and vertical mixing
- Intensive homogenising with adjustable shear rate
- GMP-compliant design with CIP cleaning
This results in permanently stable emulsions. Are you planning a new plant? We will be happy to advise you, including on used homogenising mixers.
FAQ: Manufacturing lotions
What distinguishes a lotion from a cream?
Lotions have a higher water content and are more fluid. They are usually O/W emulsions that spread easily and are quickly absorbed.
How is a lotion manufactured industrially?
The water and oil phases are heated separately, emulsified and homogenised in the vacuum homogenising mixer, cooled while stirring and supplemented with temperature-sensitive additives.
How do lotions remain stable despite their low viscosity?
Through a very fine, narrow droplet distribution, suitable emulsifiers and stabilisers and reproducible homogenisation.
Which machine is suitable?
Pressure- and vacuum-resistant homogenising mixers with adjustable shear, a scraper system independent of the direction of rotation and a rotating CIP system.
Does SEEFRIED supply plants for lotions?
Yes, SEEFRIED Verfahrenstechnik designs emulsion plants and supplies inspected used homogenising mixers.
