The production of active ingredients involves operations that must be precise, fast, efficient and at the same time gentle. A conventional agitator alone cannot handle this task.
High-performance agitating and homogenising systems
This is why process plants with integrated, powerful agitating and homogenising systems are used. Their rotor/stator system ensures optimum size reduction of the solids while increasing the surface area of the powder in the liquid. This produces agglomerate-free solutions within a few minutes.
Breaking up the agglomerates makes the entire particle surface accessible to the liquid. As a result, active ingredients dissolve more quickly and evenly, suspensions become more homogeneous, and dosing accuracy increases.
For poorly soluble active ingredients, a finer particle size can improve the dissolution rate and thus the bioavailability. For true micronisation down to a few micrometres, however, jet mills, bead mills or high-pressure homogenisers are usually used. The rotor/stator homogeniser mainly takes care of deagglomerating, wetting and dispersing.
Requirements for the plant
- Variable setting of the process parameters
- Infinitely variable speed adjustment of agitator and homogeniser for efficient stirring and homogenising in all speed ranges
- Simple expansion in line with new developments and requirements
FAQ: Processing active ingredients
What requirements does active ingredient processing place on the plant?
Precise, fast, efficient and at the same time gentle processes: high shear for dispersing, variable speeds, exact temperature control, GMP design as well as CIP and SIP.
Why are homogenising mixers used instead of simple agitators?
Only the rotor-stator system generates the shear forces needed to reduce solids in size, break up agglomerates and distribute active ingredients evenly.
How does particle size influence efficacy?
Smaller particles have a larger surface area and dissolve faster. This can improve bioavailability and reduce the amount of active ingredient required.
How are sensitive active ingredients protected?
Through infinitely adjustable speeds, controlled energy input, temperature control and working under vacuum or inert gas.
How does SEEFRIED support manufacturers of active ingredients?
With process consulting, plant planning, qualification and inspected used homogenising mixers.
